Jerry Jones Reacts to Warren Moon's Jab at Dez Bryant

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

In a recent radio interview, Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon was asked about Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. He used the question as an opportunity to take a shot at Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has predictably come to Bryant's aid.

Moon touted Blackmon, who recently declared for the NFL draft, as an incredible talent and compared him to Bryant in that regard. At the same time, though, he said the two Oklahoma State alums couldn't be more different in terms of their actions.

"

He's a beast, isn't he? He's like Dez Bryant with all of his brain cells. He's a guy that has all those skills that Dez Bryant has but he's not the knucklehead that Dez Bryant has turned out to be with Dallas. And a much better route runner than Dez Bryant is, but a very tremendous talent.

Perhaps Moon was a little rough on Bryant, as he was generally a model citizen this season, but his point is well taken. Just from what I have observed, Blackmon certainly seems to have his head on straight, as opposed to Bryant, who has had a number of off-the-field issues.

According to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News, Jones disagreed with that assessment.

"

I think certainly Dez is everything that we had hoped he would be as a player and he knew and we knew that he had some off-the-field challenges that were not of substance nature, which is big-time important, but was more maturity. He hasn't disappointed in terms of how we evaluate him but he has certainly made improvement in those areas... He is everything that we thought he would be and we will and want to get the ball in his hands more.

"

Bryant made strides as a receiver in his second season, although I don't think he has become the dominant player that Jones and Co. had envisioned. His 63 catches for 928 yards and nine touchdowns were very solid, but Jones likes to speak as though he's already one of the best in the game.

Both Moon and Jones make valid points when it comes to Bryant. I think Moon is correct in that Blackmon is more complete as a player and a person. Jones was right to support Bryant, though, because he does seem like he has been much less of a distraction.

Ultimately, Moon and Jones both have a right to speak on the matter. Moon is an analyst who was just calling it like he sees it, and Jones was merely coming to the defense of one of his employees. Jones should be given credit for defending Bryant rather than attacking Moon, though.
