Schefter: Steelers Want to Keep Russell Wilson on New Contract in NFL Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly hoping that quarterback Russell Wilson's time with them lasts longer than one year.

During Thursday's episode of Get Up, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Steelers would like to retain Wilson beyond the 2024 season.

"They'd like to go ahead and keep Russell Wilson and re-sign him to keep him in Pittsburgh," Schefter said.

Wilson signed a one-year veteran's minimum deal with the Steelers this past offseason after being released by the Denver Broncos, who still owed him over $37 million for the 2024 season.

Wilson has been a solid fit for head coach Mike Tomlin's offense in his first year in Pittsburgh. He's totaled 2,334 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while adding two rushing touchdowns in 10 games this season. The Steelers have a 10-6 record and already clinched a playoff berth.

Schefter pointed out that there won't be many options at the quarterback position available to Pittsburgh during the upcoming offseason, so it would make sense for the team to bring Wilson back on a new deal.

"Who's gonna be out there that's an upgrade over Russell Wilson right now? There are two logical first-round quarterbacks in the draft, they're not gonna get either one of those," Schefter explained. "The top free-agent quarterbacks are gonna be Sam Darnold and Russell Wilson. Is there another quarterback in the trade market that's all of a sudden gonna spring-free? Probably not. So, this is where the Steelers are."

Wilson and the Steelers will close out the regular season on Jan. 5 in an AFC North matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals (7-8).
