NFL 2009 Mock Draft Through Round Four: Who's the New No. 1?

Tanner ThomsJan 3, 2009

The regular season is over and we are now making our way into the playoffs and closer to the NFL Draft.

I have now added a fourth round of mock drafting to spice up the mix.

Please enjoy!

ROUND ONE

1. Detroit Lions: Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football
Rams Seahawks Football

Detroit is coming off the worst season in NFL history. Winless went the Lions because overall they have no star power besides Calvin Johnson. The Lions need a quarterback badly. Sam Bradford has not decided whether he will go pro, but if he does, he will go No. 1.

2. St. Louis Rams: Andre Smith, Offensive Tackle, Alabama

St. Louis for the second straight year has the second overall pick in the draft. Orlando Pace is 34 and can never seem to stay healthy. Andre Smith is the best offensive tackle in the draft and will be a great blocker for years to come.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Brian Orakpo, Defensive End, Texas

Kansas City was amongst the bottom of the league in sacks forced. After trading away Jared Allen, they lacked a true pass rush. Brian Orakpo is the best pass rusher in college football and would go great with the Chiefs.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Crabtree, Wide Receiver, Texas Tech

Seattle was a big disappointment this year because of their lack of explosiveness on offense. Deion Branch is a good receiver when healthy, which is rare. The Seahawks need a true No. 1 receiver, and they will get it with sure-handed Michael Crabtree.

5. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Curry, Outside/Inside Linebacker, Wake Forest

Cleveland's linebackers are awful, and with Willie McGinest likely to retire, they will get even worse. Aaron Curry's stock is rising fast up the charts after his great performance in their bowl game.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Oher, Offensive Tackle, Ole Miss

The Bengals have a pretty bad offensive line. Besides Cedric Benson's 171-yard explosion, they were pretty pathetic at running the ball all year. Michael Oher is a beast who hardly ever gives up a sack and can create holes for running backs.

7. Oakland Raiders: Malcolm Jenkins, Cornerback, Ohio State

Nnamdi Asomugha could be leaving for another team when free agency begins, which leaves Oakland thin at cornerback. Oakland made a mistake in cutting DeAngelo Hall in my opinion. Malcolm Jenkins is the best cornerback in the draft and would start right away in Oakland.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Rey Maualuga, Inside Linebacker, USC

Mike Peterson could be departing for free agency, and with the way he and coaches didn't get along this year, there is a good chance he won't be back. Rey Maualuga won best defensive player of the year in college in 2008 which cements his status in the Top 10.

9. Green Bay Packers: Michael Johnson, Defensive End, Georgia Tech

Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was cut early in the season, which left the Packers with no pass rush besides Aaron Kampman. Green Bay needs another defensive end after the way they let running backs run all over them.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Eugene Monroe, Offensive Tackle, Virginia

San Francisco needs a lot of help on offense. Their offensive line is horrendous. Eugene Monroe will be a steal here for the 49ers. They will finally land a franchise offensive tackle and allow Shaun Hill or whoever their quarterback is to stay on his feet.

11. Buffalo Bills: Everette Brown, Defensive End, Florida State

Buffalo lacks a strong pass rush. They finished the year with only 24 sacks. Aaron Schobel missed a big portion of the year, and he is getting older and more worn down. Everette Brown is 6-foot-4, 252 pounds, which means he could play at linebacker if needed.

12. Denver Broncos: Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

Denver's weakness on defense was their secondary giving up huge pass plays. Josh Barrett is safe to stay in Denver, but the rest need to go. Taylor Mays is hard-hitting and if you saw his hit in the Rose Bowl, you'll agree.

13. Washington Redskins: James Laurinaitis, Inside Linebacker, Ohio State

There is a good chance that Laurinaitis would be moved to outside linebacker to replace Marcus Washington, who had an off year. James Laurinaitisis an intelligent and tough football player with a big desire to win.

14. New Orleans Saints: Brandon Spikes, Inside Linebacker, Florida

This pick will be forfeited to the New York Jets if the Saints decide to re-sign free-agent to be Jonathan Vilma. There is a chance that Vilma can be put into free agency and re-signed once there. Brandon Spikes would start at middle linebacker, while Jonathan Vilma would move outside.

15. Houston Texans: William Moore, Safety, Missouri

Houston's secondary has been terrible for years, and it could get worse if Dunta Robinson is let go. William Moore is a ball-hawking safety who will make a big impact on the Texans' secondary.

16. San Diego Chargers: Chris Wells, Running Back, Ohio State

LaDainian Tomlinson has clearly lost a step in his game and he's publicly announced that he will retire when his contract expires. Darren Sproles is also a free agent. Chris Wells will be able to be a third-down back and a starter for the future.

17. New York Jets: Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Georgia

And so you're thinking, "Okay, Matt Stafford falls to 17. What?" You've read correctly. No team really needs a quarterback before this pick besides the Lions and they take Bradford. Brett Favre will likely hang it up this offseason, and we will have to deal with another Brett Favre soap opera.

18. Chicago Bears: Jeremy Maclin, Wide Receiver, Missouri

Chicago's offensive troubles were due to their inconsistency at wide receiver. When Devin Hester is your no. 1, you have problems. Jeremy Maclin will be a star player right away in Chicago and the target they need.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Knowshon Moreno, Running Back, Georgia

Can you honestly rely on Warrick Dunn and Carnell Williams all year? Earnest Graham is hurt and not like he was in the 2007-2008 season. This pick will have that "That makes no sense!" effect if it happens, but I'm betting most of you thought the same thing about Chris Johnson too.

20. Detroit Lions from Dallas: Jason Smith, Offensive Tackle, Baylor

The Lions surrendered 52 sacks this season. 52! That's awful! Jason Smith would be a steal this late in the first round. Detroit needs all the help they can get at every position.

21. Arizona Cardinals: Greg Hardy, Defensive End, Ole Miss

Arizona needs defensive help more than anything. Their defense line besides Bertrand Berry is pretty bad. Greg Hardy will be the pass rush they could strongly use.

22. Philadelphia Eagles: Ciron Black, Offensive Tackle, LSU

Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan are both free agents to be which means one of them likely won't be resigned. Ciron Black is big and strong and will be able to replace either one of them if they happen to leave.

23. Minnesota Vikings: Eben Britton, Offensive Tackle, Arizona

Ryan Cook has not worked out well with the Vikings. The Vikings could really use a stud right tackle. Minnesota's line is good, and they can make it great if they land Eben Britton.

24. New England Patriots: Vontae Davis, Cornerback, Illinois

Deltha O'Neal is not the cornerback that he once was. New England needs a true No. 1 corner. Vontae Davis might not slip this far in the draft, but if he does the Pats won't hesitate to pick him.

25. Atlanta Falcons: Terrence Cody, Nose Tackle, Alabama

The Falcons don't have many more needs to fill, believe it or not. Nose Tackle is a position that could be upgraded a bit. Terrence Cody is the best nose tackle in the draft.

26. Miami Dolphins: D.J. Moore, Cornerback, Vanderbilt

Miami's secondary actually got better as the season progressed. They finished the season at 19th against the pass. D.J. Moore would be the right pick and a good fit for the Dolphins.

27. Baltimore Ravens: Darrius Heyward-Bey, Wide Receiver, Maryland

Baltimore's Derrick Mason had one of the better seasons of his career, but with that said, he's nearly 35 years old. It's time for the Ravens to develop a No. 1 wide receiver for the future.

28. Indianapolis Colts: Peria Jerry, Defensive Tackle, Ole Miss

Indianapolis hasn't had a good defensive tackle in some time. Anthony McFarland was terrible when he came to the Colts. Finally, the Colts get the man they need in Peria Jerry.

29. Philadelphia Eagles from Carolina: Brandon Pettigrew, Tight End, Oklahoma State

L.J. Smith is awful, and it's about time he goes to another team. Perhaps the Lions? The Eagles obviously need help at tight end, and Brandon Pettigrew is the best there is at that spot.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Duke Robinson, Guard, Oklahoma

Pittsburgh's offensive line is horrendous. Ben Roethlisberger is constantly getting knocked down because his line is scared to block, it seems. Duke Robinson can play either tackle or guard.

31. New York Giants: Clint Sintim, Outside Linebacker, Virginia

Danny Clark isn't worth starting any longer. It appears that Mathias Kiwanuka is going to stay at defensive end for a while. Outside linebacker is the choice here, and Clint Sintim is the best available.

32. Tennessee Titans: Victor Harris, Cornerback, Virginia Tech

Nick Harper is 34 years old and his contract expires next year. Tennessee's specialty is their defense and what better than to make it even better. Victor Harris with the last pick of the first round is a steal.

ROUND TWO

33. Detroit Lions: Brian Cushing, Outside Linebacker, USC

Detroit needs help everywhere. Paris Lenon has to go.

34. St. Louis Rams: Patrick Chung, Safety, Oregon

Todd Johnson can't be the starter at strong safety next season.

35. Kansas City Chiefs: Alex Mack, Center, California

A first-round prospect drops to the Chiefs, who could really use him.

36. Seattle Seahawks: Rashad Johnson, Safety, Alabama

Brian Russell needs to be replaced.

37. Cleveland Browns: Alphonso Smith, Cornerback, Wake Forest

Cleveland needs to reboost their secondary.

38. Cincinnati Bengals: George Selvie, Defensive End, South Florida

Cincinnati needs a better pass rush.

Oakland needs help at wide receiver badly.

Jacksonville needs serious depth on the offensive line.

41. Green Bay Packers: Trevard Lindley, Cornerback, Kentucky

Al Harris could be leaving for another team.

The defensive line could improve greatly.

Buffalo needs help with their interior blocking.

44. Denver Broncos: Shonn Greene, Running Back, Iowa

Shonn Greene would go great with the Denver Broncos.

Yeremiah Bell is bad. Miami needs a secondary change.

46. New York Giants (from New Orleans): Derrick Williams, Wide Receiver, Penn State

Plaxico Burress won't be back next year. New York will need a No. 1 receiver.

47. Houston Texans: Connor Barwin, Defensive End, Cincinnati

Besides Mario Williams, the Texans only had 13 sacks.

48. New England Patriots (from San Diego): Emanuel Cook, Safety, South Carolina

Rodney Harrison will likely retire soon.

49. New York Jets: Kenny Britt, Wide Receiver, Rutgers

Laveranues Coles is 31 and will be a free agent after the 2009 season.

50. Chicago Bears: Fenuki Toupu, Offensive Tackle, Oregon

Chicago needs a tackle with John Tait turning 34 very soon.

51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sen'Derrick Marks, Defensive Tackle, Auburn

Tampa Bay will have to build the defense up big since Monte Kiffin left.

52. Dallas Cowboys: Mike Mickens, Cornerback, Cincinnati

Dallas' corners are 33 and 31, respectively.

53. Arizona Cardinals: Sam Young, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame

Arizona only averaged 3.5 yards per carry this year.

54. Philadelphia Eagles: Herman Johnson, Guard, LSU

More blocking for the Eagles.

55. Minnesota Vikings: Juaquin Iglesias, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma

Will allow Sidney Rice to move into the slot.

56. New England Patriots: Larry English, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, N. Illinois

New England needs to get younger at linebacker.

57. Atlanta Falcons: Jermaine Gresham, Tight End, Oklahoma

A talented tight end and another weapon for Matt Ryan.

58. Miami Dolphins: Ron Brace, Nose Tackle, Boston College

Jason Ferguson is 34 years old.

59. Baltimore Ravens: Tyson Jackson, Defensive End, LSU

Depth on the defensive line, which never hurts.

60. Indianapolis Colts: Brian Robiskie, Wide Receiver, Ohio State

Marvin Harrison might retire sooner rather than later.

61. Carolina Panthers: Evander Hood, Defensive Tackle, Missouri

The hopeful replacement of Kris Jenkins.

62. Pittsburgh Steelers: Darius Butler, Cornerback, Connecticut

Deshea Townsend will be 34 by the time the season begins.

63. New York Giants: Javon Ringer, Running Back, Michigan State

Derrick Ward is likely going to be with a new team next year.

64. Tennessee Titans: Tyrone McKenzie, Outside Linebacker, South Florida

Keith Bulluck will be 32 in April, and his contract expires after the 2009 season.

ROUND THREE

65. Detroit Lions: Keenan Lewis, Cornerback, Oregon State

A No. 2 cornerback behind Leigh Bodden.

66. St. Louis Rams: C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson

A change-of-pace back for Steven Jackson.

67. Kansas City Chiefs: Darry Beckwith, Inside Linebacker, LSU

Pat Thomas shouldn't be the starter at middle linebacker next year.

The new slot receiver.

Mark Roman's contract expires after the 2009 season.

75. Buffalo Bills: Jared Cook, Tight End, South Carolina

Need a quality pass-catching tight end.

76. New York Jets (from New Orleans): Mark Parson, Cornerback, Ohio

The Jets were so desperate for cornerbacks they signed Ty Law.

77. Houston Texans: Andy Levitre, Guard, Oregon State

Mike Brisiel isn't worth starting.

78. San Diego Chargers: Fili Moala, Defensive End/Defensive Tackle, USC

Could use depth at defensive end.

79. Denver Broncos: Dorell Scott, Defensive Tackle, Clemson

Need major help on the defensive line.

80. Washington Redskins: Andy Kemp, Guard, Wisconsin
