Jets News: Mike Vrabel Reportedly Most Coveted HC Candidate amid Robinson Interview

Timothy RappDec 17, 2024

Don't be surprised if the New York Jets make a strong push to land Mike Vrabel as their next head coach.

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, "multiple NFL sources believe [Vrabel] is the coach the Jets covet the most," and the team already interviewed Jon Robinson for its general manager vacancy. Robinson and Vrabel worked together in Tennessee for four seasons.

Vrabel continuously pops up in coaching rumors, an indication that he's highly respected around league circles. In six seasons leading the Titans he compiled a 54-45 record, four straight winning campaigns to start his tenure, three playoff berths and two playoff wins (both in 2019).

But his last two seasons didn't go according to plan, as the Titans went 13-21 between 2022-23, leading to a parting of the ways. Still, his six years in Tennessee included two things the Jets haven't managed since 2010—a playoff appearance and a postseason win.

One major question any incoming head coach will be facing, of course, is the future of the quarterback position in New York.

Will it be the 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, who is clearly past his prime but has still managed a respectable 3255 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season? Or will the Jets release Rodgers and address the position in free agency and/or the NFL draft?

One reason the Chicago Bears have a particularly intriguing opening at head coach is that the team has its quarterback of the future in Caleb Williams. The Jets, at least currently, are operating in more of a limbo state. Coaches ready to build out their system with a younger quarterback aren't going to be moved by the presence of Rodgers, while coaches ready to win now may prefer the veteran quarterback stick around.

It's unclear which camp Vrabel would fall into, but he would certainly want clarity on New York's plans going forward. Obviously, much of that decision-making will also come down to who the team appoints at general manager, which will also impact Vrabel's choice.

A Robinson hire would offer Vrabel a level of continuity. If nothing else, Vrabel to the Jets seems like a real possibility if the right chips fall into place.
