James has only recently started to get consistent playing time in games. He began this season on the Lakers' roster, appearing mostly off the bench in late-game blowout situations.
The 20-year-old was assigned to the South Bay Lakers on Nov. 7, with the initial plan being he would only play in home games. He did have a few more appearances with the NBA club after the move, most recently on Dec. 8 against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Lakers reversed course and decided to start playing James in G League road games beginning with a Dec. 12 matchup against the Valley Suns. He responded by scoring a career-high 30 points on 13-of-23 shooting in 25 minutes in South Bay's 106-100 loss to the Suns.
James and the Lakers had a back-to-back against the Suns on Dec. 13. He wasn't as efficient scoring the ball in that game with 16 points on 6-of-20 shooting, but it was his third straight game scoring in double figures.
Overall, James is averaging 14.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game in five G League games.
The G League Winter Showcase features 31 games across four days. More than 200 players currently on G League rosters will take part in the event looking to secure an NBA contract.
The NBA designed the event to happen around the point in the season when teams can begin signing players to 10-day contracts. Clubs can hand out 10-day contracts beginning on Jan. 5.
James doesn't have to worry about that since his rookie contract with the Lakers is fully guaranteed for $4.4 million.
