NFL News: Lions' David Montgomery to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery on Knee Injury

Zach BacharDec 16, 2024

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is set to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a knee injury that he suffered during a 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Dan Campbell announced on Monday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport revealed that Montgomery is dealing with a torn MCL

Detroit has been hit hard by injuries recently, as defensive tackle Alim McNeill suffered a season-ending torn ACL while cornerback Carlton Davis will be sidelined for six weeks with a fractured jaw (via Rapoport).

Montgomery was never ruled out of Sunday's contest after suffering the injury, but he was used sparingly as Detroit leaned on its passing attack in an attempt to climb back from a double-digit deficit.

He picked up just four yards on five carries against the Bills.

While Detroit still sits at 12-2 this year, the team's Super Bowl aspirations may take a hit without the veteran available. Montgomery continued to play a key role in one of the NFL's top backfield duos alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, helping the Lions own the league's sixth-best rushing attack.

In 13 starts prior to Sunday's loss, Montgomery ran for 771 yards and 12 touchdowns on 180 attempts. He also became an increased threat as a receiver, catching 32 passes for 310 yards.

Montgomery signed a two-year, $18.25 million extension with Detroit on Oct. 12.

Gibbs has proven that he's capable of handling an increased workload, but the Lions may give a larger role to Craig Reynolds if offensive coordinator Ben Johnson wants to continue utilizing multiple running backs.

Now, Detroit must navigate throughout the remainder of its 2024 campaign without Montgomery.
