Cowboys' Stephen Jones: Trevon Diggs Faces 8-Month Recovery After Knee Injury Surgery

Andrew PetersDec 15, 2024

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is facing a significant recovery from his season-ending knee injury.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that Diggs will need surgery and the recovery will be "about" eight months.

"Unfortunately he did have the cartilage issue," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan (h/t The Athletic's Jon Machota). "It's something that is significant. It's gonna take a surgery that'll take him quite a bit of time to return from. It's about an eight-month deal."

Diggs had been managing the knee injury over the past few weeks before being ruled out of the Cowboys' matchup with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. His absence from Sunday's game marked the third contest he had missed this season due to injuries.

He said that he was battling pain during the game after last week's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I felt OK. Just dealing with the same issue as I was before, but other than that, I was just fighting through it and pushing," Diggs said, per ESPN's Todd Archer.

The fifth-year player played just two games a season ago due to a torn ACL

With his season now over, Diggs finished the year with 42 tackles, 11 passes defended and a pair of interceptions in 11 games. The 26-year-old was a two-time Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022 and led the league in interceptions in just his second season, but has since struggled with injuries.

He'll now be tasked with recovering from his surgery to return strong in 2025.

Injuries have been an unfortunate theme for the Cowboys in 2024. Star linebacker Micah Parsons missed time with an ankle sprain and quarterback Dak Prescott's season was over after just eight games because of a hamstring injury. Several other key members have spent time on the injured list this season as well.

Amid all the injuries, Dallas has had a disappointing 5-8 season and is on its way to missing the playoffs barring a late-season miracle.
