Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: 'Rising Belief' Heat Would Deal Star for 'Fair Value'

Zach BacharDec 14, 2024

The Miami Heat could reportedly be willing to trade star forward Jimmy Butler before the Feb. 6 deadline.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, there is a "rising belief" around the NBA that Miami would move Butler for "fair value." Multiple teams also believe that the veteran is "seriously eyeing" new destinations for the first time.

The Heat feel confident about potentially finding a trade for Butler, as Fischer noted that there is "no concern" from the organization surrounding Butler leaving without compensation returning to Miami.

The 35-year-old wasn't able to agree to a contract extension with the Heat over the summer, putting his long-term future as a member of the team in jeopardy. Butler could hit free agency following the 2024-25 season, as he holds a $52.4 million player option for his 2025-26 campaign.

There is "widespread belief" that he's determined to decline the player option regardless of a possible trade from the Heat, per Fischer.

HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported on Dec. 2 that there has been "quiet discourse" in league circles surrounding the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks as suitors for Butler.

Sam Amick of The Athletic also revealed that the Golden State Warriors expressed interest in the six-time All-Star over the summer.

Needless to say, it shouldn't be difficult for the Heat to find a willing partner if they choose to seriously explore trades involving Butler prior to the deadline.

He's in the midst of another efficient season with Miami despite a relatively low scoring total. In 18 starts this year, Butler is averaging 18.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game on 55.0/36.0/77.8 shooting splits.

His 57.3 effective field-goal percentage would also represent a career-high mark over the course of a full season.

The Heat haven't been able to establish themselves as one of the Eastern Conference's best teams to open the year, sitting at 13-10. If Miami continues to hover around .500 as the trade deadline approaches, Butler could be on the move.
