Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: 'Not a Good Feeling' to Have 3 Games Scheduled in 11 Days

Joseph ZuckerDec 12, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes isn't relishing the challenge he and his teammates will have from what promises to be a tough three-week stretch ahead.

The Chiefs hit the road to play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. They're back in action on Dec. 21 against the Houston Texans and then play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day for their third game in 11 days.

Kansas City knew the schedule well in advance, so Mahomes said he has been prepping for this run "by tailoring my workouts, tailoring how you practice and you prepare."

"It is not a good feeling," he said, per ESPN's Adam Teicher. I'm excited to play on Christmas to hopefully get back from what we did last year [when the Chiefs lost on the holiday to the Las Vegas Raiders], but you never want to play this many games in this short of time. It's just not great for your body. But at the end of the day, it's your job, your profession. You have to come to work and do it."

Teicher noted the Chiefs aren't alone. The Texans, Steelers and Baltimore Ravens all play three times in 11 days too.

It's partially a byproduct of the NFL trying to stake more and more of a claim on Christmas Day, a holiday typically reserved for the NBA. With Christmas on a Wednesday this year, scheduling headaches were inevitable.

Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones said he plans to approach the NFL Players Association in the offseason to push for having a later bye week when a team is slated to have such a short turnaround between games.

"If a team has somewhat of a schedule like that, they should get a late-season bye," he said, per Teicher. "We don't need a Week [6] bye ... Give it to us in Week 8, Week 10, something like that."

One benefit for the Chiefs is they'll have a little more time to rest before their season finale against the Denver Broncos in Week 18. They'll definitely need it.
