Report: Doug Pederson's Firing as Jaguars HC Seen as 'Likely' by NFL Insiders

Adam WellsDec 11, 2024

Even though the Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to make a decision about their head-coaching position amid another losing season, Doug Pederson's future with the organization appears to be on thin ice.

Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, the feeling among people within the NFL is Pederson will "likely" get fired.

Pederson's seat has been scoring hot at various points this season, but he's managed to get through it with his job still intact.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Nov. 16 that the Jaguars could make a "dramatic move" that included firing Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke pending the results of their game that week against the Detroit Lions.

The Jaguars wound up losing that game 52-6, but Pederson and Baalke survived. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported at the time both men were spared because firing them would have been like rearranging "deck chairs on the Titanic," implying the ship is going down this season regardless of who is in charge.

It doesn't speak well for Pederson that Jaguars players have said publicly the team has quit during games this season.

This certainly feels like the right time for the Jaguars to make a move. Their trajectory in three seasons with Pederson is moving in the wrong direction. They won the AFC South and a playoff game in his first season in 2022.

It looked like that positive momentum carried into 2023 when the Jaguars started 8-3, but the wheels have fallen off since Week 13 last year. They lost five of their last six games to miss the playoffs.

The Jaguars enter Week 15 this season with a 3-10 record. They are 4-15 in their last 19 games dating back to the 2023 campaign.

Considering team owner Shad Khan said coming into 2024 that this was the "best team assembled" in franchise history, Pederson would seem unlikely to get a fourth season as head coach given how far off the rails things have gone.
