Heisman Watch 2024: Latest Odds and Predictions in Race For Top Award

Joe TanseyDec 9, 2024

The 2024 Heisman Trophy race might go down as one of the least competitive competitions in the award's history.

Colorado's Travis Hunter and Boise State's Ashton Jeanty have been in a two-man race for the Heisman since the midway point of the season.

No quarterbacks emerged as challengers to the two-way star and the nation's top running back, and it would be a surprise if any signal-caller gets a first-place vote in 2024.

Oregon's Dillon Gabriel is the best option to head to New York as a Heisman finalist, but he has no chance of winning the honor.

Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward have cases to be finalists, but they will struggle to find first-, second-, or third-place votes.

The race is down to Hunter and Jeanty, and in the eyes of the oddsmakers, the decision has already been made as to who will win the award on Saturday.

Travis Hunter has been the Heisman favorite for the last few weeks.

Colorado's two-way star is the best individual athlete in college football, and he could possibly be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Hunter's stats at Colorado as a wide receiver are impressive, but there's no doubt that his Heisman case benefited from the lack of dominant quarterbacks in college football in 2024.

Hunter probably would've been a finalist if he put up similar numbers last season, but it would've been hard to argue him against Jayden Daniels.

He had a perfect individual season at the perfect time for a non-quarterback to pick up a rare Heisman victory.

If Hunter cashes in on his favorite status, he will be the third non-quarterback to win since 2015, and he will become the first non-quarterback to not attend Alabama to win the award since Reggie Bush in 2005.

Mark Ingram (2009), Derrick Henry (2015) and DeVonta Smith (2020) were the last three non-quarterbacks to win the Heisman.

2. Ashton Jeanty

Jeanty's performance in the Mountain West Championship Game wasn't enough to shift the Heisman odds in his favor.

The Boise State running back totaled 209 yards on 32 carries, but he only found the end zone once against the UNLV Rebels.

Jeanty finished the regular season as the FBS' leading rusher by 847 yards and he tied with Army quarterback Bryson Daily for the most rushing touchdowns with 29.

It is, without question, one of the best single seasons from a running back in college football history.

However, Jeanty may come up short in his quest to win the Heisman because of Hunter's achievements on both sides of the ball.

The case in favor of Jeanty is that he helped Boise State make the College Football Playoff, while Hunter and Colorado did not even make the Big 12 Championship Game.

3. Dillon Gabriel

All of the first- and second-place votes should go to Hunter and Jeanty.

Dillon Gabriel should be a finalist as the quarterback of the No. 1 team in the country, but he doesn't have a shot at many top-two votes.

Gabriel had a solid season with 3,558 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns, but he hasn't been in the Heisman spotlight all year like Hunter and Jeanty.

Gabriel finished eighth among FBS quarterbacks in both passing yards and touchdowns. He led Oregon to the Big Ten championship and will be a primary reason why the Ducks win the national championship, if they reach that feat.

However, Gabriel was not as dominant at his position as Hunter and Jeanty and that should leave him further down the ballot.
