CFB Fans Call Out OSU, Penn State Seeds, Oregon Path in 12-Team CFP Bracket Format

Timothy RappDec 8, 2024

The first year of the expanded College Football Playoff was not without its controversies. Would you have expected any less?

SMU ultimately got in over Alabama. No. 5 Texas and No. 6 Penn State have arguably the easiest paths to the semifinals, while Oregon's reward for going undefeated is a second-round matchup against either Ohio State or Tennessee. Seedings, in general, divided opinion among fans and pundits alike.

Here is smattering of the reaction to the 12-team field announced on Sunday:

One of the main takeaways from Sunday's seeding is that there will be a major push to simply seed the tournament based on the rankings themselves, rather than giving four conference champions an automatic bye.

If that were the case, the tournament would have had been seeded as thus:

  1. Oregon (bye)
  2. Georgia (bye)
  3. Texas (bye)
  4. Penn State (bye)
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Ohio State
  7. Tennessee
  8. Indiana
  9. Boise State
  10. SMU
  11. Arizona State
  12. Clemson

And the opening round matchups would have been Notre Dame hosting Clemson, with the winner playing Penn State; Ohio State hosting Arizona State, with the winner taking on Texas; Tennessee hosting SMU, with the winner facing Georgia; and Indiana hosting Boise State, with the winner taking on Oregon.

There's no doubt that such a bracket would have had its own debates, namely around the seedings for Texas, Penn State, Indiana, etc. But on balance, it would have been a fairer distribution of teams and given Oregon a much more favorable draw than they received in this year's version.

Time will tell if the seeding procedures are ultimately reworked. But this year's field is set, and now the top programs in the nation will decide things on the field.
