Jets Rumors: NY 'Likely' to Draft QB Even if Aaron Rodgers Returns in 2025 NFL Season

Joseph ZuckerDec 8, 2024

The New York Jets may look to line up a long-term plan at quarterback this offseason regardless of whether Aaron Rodgers returns for 2025 or not, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported Sunday the Jets "could and likely will still draft a young quarterback" in the spring. He posited Rodgers would be a "bridge starter" if he stays in the Big Apple.

The signs are pointing toward a breakup between New York and the quarterback it hoped would be the missing piece of the puzzle.

Last week, Rapoport said Rodgers "is considered right now to be a long shot to return to the Jets."

Before that, the NFL insider reported the four-time MVP "must play far better down the stretch for the opportunity to return in 2025." The Athletic's Dianna Russini painted a similar picture and wrote that Rodgers, for his part, might not be keen on staying with the Jets.

During a November appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the 41-year-old refuted the idea he has made any decision about his status for next year

Earlier this week, though, Rodgers bristled at the notion he has something to prove to the Jets brass down the home stretch, calling it "ridiculous."

"If they want me to stay, fantastic," he told reporters. "If it takes these five games, maybe they don't know what I bring to the table.

"But that being said I'd love to play really friggin' well the last five games."

Rodgers has thrown for 2,627 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions though 12 starts. His 48.4 QBR and 218.9 passing yards per game are on pace to be his second lowest over a full season, per Pro Football Reference.

Given his age, New York would basically be going year to year with Rodgers even in the best of circumstances. His performance and the general drama surrounding the franchise raise obvious questions about whether the bargain is worth it anymore.

Between that and the inevitable hiring a new head coach and general manager, it would be a good time for the Jets to hit the reset button, both at quarterback and with regard to a wider organizational mindset.
