NFL Rumors: Teams Budget for $265M-$275M Salary Cap for 2025 Before Official Reveal

Joseph ZuckerDec 8, 2024

NFL teams are tentatively expecting the salary cap in 2025 to fall between $265 million and $275 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

That would be a slight bump from the $255.4 million teams have to spend this season.

"The cap is, in fact, expected to rise from $255.4 million this league year, sources say," Rapoport and Pelissero said. "But how much it rises may not be clear for months. The league and union traditionally finish their accounting and agree to the final number around the NFL Scouting Combine, which takes place in late February and early March in Indianapolis."

The insiders added that team personnel are "frustrated" with the general uncertainty over the cap.

The NFL Scouting Combine runs from Feb. 24 through March 3. The deadline for teams to apply the franchise or transition tag to their players is March 4, and the free agency negotiating window opens March 10.

There isn't much time between when general managers will know the salary cap for sure and when they'll start utilizing what space they have, so the frustration is understandable.

Among fans, the excitement level for free agency is dampened somewhat by the fact a marquee quarterback isn't projected to hit the market. Sam Darnold, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson headline the position.

The likes of wide receiver Tee Higgins, safety Jevon Holland, guard Trey Smith and cornerback D.J. Reed should garner plenty of intrigue, though.
