Bill Belichick Rumors: Jaguars Seen as 'Most Obvious' Landing Spot amid UNC Talks

Julia StumbaughDec 6, 2024

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick could return to the NFL next season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, "most sources" believe the Jaguars to be the "most obvious" NFL destination for Belichick.

Belichick meanwhile "won't consider" joining the New York Jets, according to Jones.

One source told Jones they weren't certain how Belichick would feel about the Jaguars' stadium renovation plans, which will involve the team playing outside Jacksonville for the 2027 season.

Belichick might not be the only former NFL coach making a comeback in 2025. Jones reported that Josh McDaniels, former Patriots offensive coordinator and Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders head coach, could direct Belichick's offense at his next stop.

ESPN's Chris Low reported on Thursday that Belichick has held discussions with UNC about taking his next head coaching job in college football.

"Sources told ESPN that Belichick, who has spent his career in the NFL, wants to coach again and is open to listening to people at the college and NFL level," Low wrote.

The Tar Heels are seeking a replacement for Mack Brown, whose firing after six seasons with the team was announced on Nov. 26.

Given the challenges surrounding joining college football at the beginning of the NIL and the shared revenue era, it seems likely Belichick would prefer a return to the NFL.

He has not worked in the league since the 2023 season, when he led the Patriots to a 4-13 record in his 24th and final season with the team.

The veteran head coach reportedly received interest from the Falcons and Eagles the following offseason but was not hired by an NFL team ahead of the 2024 campaign.

ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr., Seth Wickersham and Jeremy Fowler reported in April that the Eagles and Falcons believed "if you hire Belichick, he will inevitably run the team, even if he doesn't demand total control."

According to Jones, a source "close to" Belichick said that the former Patriots head coach "doesn't care about full control" of his next team.

Doug Pederson is currently in his third season as the Jaguars' head coach. He is on the hot seat as the head coach of a 2-10 team that was eliminated from playoff contention after 12 games.
