NBA Exec: Klay Thompson 'An Awkward Fit so Far' with Mavs' Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving

Jack MurrayDec 6, 2024

Klay Thompson's tenure with the Dallas Mavericks has not gotten off to a seamless start.

Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million contract with Dallas this summer after spending his first 11 seasons with the Golden State Warriors. He's currently averaging 12.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 19 games and has had some shooting difficulties thus far.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported that at least one league executive views Thompson as an "awkward" fit right now.

"Klay has been an awkward fit so far," an Eastern Conference executive told Windhorst. "Derrick Jones [who left for the Clippers in free agency] shot the ball better and played better D for them last year."

While he hasn't been a massive upgrade, some believe his true impact could come in the postseason when he is more settled with the team.

"Klay has been fine," one scout told Windhorst. "His impact will be determined in the postseason, and if he has a few big games, then no one will remember what he shot from 3 in November."

Tim Bontemps of ESPN reported that scouts believe Thompson is a similar player to what he was with Golden State and that Dallas needs to use him that way.

"He's the exact same player he was with the Warriors," another scout told Bontemps. "A quality spot-up shooter who can get hot and make shots still and who can occasionally guard."

Dallas is currently 15-8 and is third in the Western Conference. Any struggles from Thompson haven't stalled the team's progress as it looks to repeat as Conference Champions and try to earn its first NBA Championship since 2011.

However, Thompson was brought in to bolster the team's three-point shooting and his current mark of 36.8 percent represents the lowest of his career.

If Thompson can find a rhythm and bump that number up a few percentage points once the calendar flips over to 2025, the Mavericks should be in a much more comfortable position as the team looks to round into form.
