Panthers' Jadeveon Clowney: 'We Can't Stand' Eagles Fans, 'They Talk the Most Junk'

Paul KasabianDec 5, 2024

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney provided his honest opinion on Philadelphia Eagles fans before his team travels to Philly this weekend.

"I know they love their fans, but I'm sure teams don't love their fans. We can't stand their fans," Clowney said.

"But Philly fans, they love their team. That's all I can tell you about Philly fans. They love their team. They throw stuff at you. They do everything. They talk the most junk out of any fans I've ever dealt with throughout my career."

The Athletic's Joseph Person then asked if this game is one where you leave the family behind.

"Oh yeah, for sure," Clowney said. "It's cold up there, so I'm sure they ain't trying to go."

For further context, the good-natured Clowney smiled as he provided his assessment of Philadelphia fans. He didn't seem as though he was looking to slam and criticize them from a soapbox so much as he was providing an honest answer to a question about the fans he's about to encounter Sunday.

On the professional sports side, Philadelphia fandom is arguably as close as one can get in the United States to international football followings. Their passion and love (and sometimes hate) for their teams and players is as extreme as one can find.

Eagles fans are out in full force of late, especially with the team riding an eight-game win streak to a 10-2 record. They notably took over AT&T Stadium as the Eagles crushed the Dallas Cowboys 34-6 in November.

On one hand, their attachment and pride can be seen as admirable.

On the other hand, Philadelphia sports fans have certainly had their share of bad moments over the years, perhaps none more infamous and discussed than the booing and then pelting of Santa Claus with snowballs in 1968.

They show off the good and bad extremes quite a bit. A Time Magazine headline on an October 2023 Sean Gregory piece notably reads: "Philly Sports Fans Are the Worst. They're Also the Best."

In sum, Philadelphia sports fans are among the best (or the best) if you root or play for their teams. Of note, their remarkable support of shortstop Trea Turner to in effect help push him out of a monstrous 2023 slump will be remembered for quite some time.

If you hate their teams or play against Philadelphia, though, then one might not have the most respect for their followers. At the very least, it's understandably not a fun place to play for Clowney and other visiting NFL players.

However, that's what Carolina is tasked with doing for a 1 p.m. ET matchup on Sunday on Lincoln Financial Field.
