In an official release from the WNBA, Tempo president Teresa Resch explained the name is meant to be a reflection of the citizens of Canada.

"Tempo is pace. It's speed. It's a heartbeat. And it's what you feel when you step into the streets of this city, and in the energy of the people who call Canada home," said Resch. "As Canada's WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country."

The WNBA announced in May that Toronto had been awarded an expansion franchise.

Per the league's official release on Thursday, the Tempo nickname was chosen following an "unprecedented public engagement program" in which more than 10,000 fans submitted ideas.

The logo is also meant to reflect the team's values, including the six lines representing the five players on the court and the sixth standing in for the fans.

An on-sale date for official merchandise hasn't been announced, but the Tempo website will provide additional information as it becomes available.

The Tempo will play home games at the Coca-Cola Coliseum starting with the 2026 season. They will be the 14th franchise in the league and second expansion club in two years, with the Golden State Valkyries set to play their first season in 2025.
