College football's path to crowning its next national champion will have a new feel with this year's 12-team playoff format.

One thing that will remain the same, though, is the massive significance of the Rose Bowl.

Perpetually one of the can't-miss contests on the postseason slate, it's now one of four quarterfinal sites that will slice the field of championship hopefuls from eight to four.

There's a chance the football gods grace us with a can't-miss collision in this contest. In fact, they just might dial up a repeat of one of the regular season's best matchups.

Oregon and Ohio State have a chance to lock horns here, and if a second meeting would be anything like the first, college football fans would be in for a holiday treat.

The Ducks and Buckeyes tussled in a top-five matchup in mid-October, and it more than lived up to the hype. It was a one-point game at halftime and a one-point game when four quarters were in the box, with Oregon holding the slight advantage both times.

While the Ducks gained (slightly) more yards (496 to 467), the Buckeyes may have felt like they let one get away. They were leading after three quarters and into the final two minutes of the fourth. But they couldn't contain dynamic Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, and they made more mistakes. The only two turnovers of the game were theirs, as were eight of the 11 penalties called that day.

Ohio State might be itching for a rematch, in other words, while Oregon, the only FBS team with an unblemished record, would surely welcome the challenge. If this winds up being the Rose Bowl matchup, it might be the must-watch of the quarterfinal round.
