Michigan OC Kirk Campbell Fired from Sherrone Moore's Coaching Staff Amid 7-5 Season

Andrew PetersDec 3, 2024

Following the conclusion of Michigan's disappointing 7-5 season, the program fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell, the school announced on Tuesday.

Michigan named tight ends coach Steve Casula as the interim offensive coordinator for the bowl game.

After its national championship a season ago, Michigan ranked 128th out of 134 FBS teams in yards per game, 122nd in yards per play and 111th in points per game.

Campbell had been on Michigan's staff since 2022, first joining as an offensive analyst after a few stints with other teams, including Penn State. In 2023, he was named quarterbacks coach and helped current Minnesota Vikings rookie J.J. McCarthy develop into a top-10 pick. His work as the quarterbacks coach earned him a promotion to offensive coordinator before this year.

"After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction," head coach Sherrone Moore announced in a press release (h/t 247Sports' Zach Shaw). "This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors."

Michigan, which salvaged some of its disappointing season with a win over rival Ohio State on Saturday, never found its groove on offense after asserting its dominant rushing attack last season. The Wolverines used three different starting quarterbacks throughout the season and they had more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11).

Michigan will now begin its search for a new offensive coordinator and try to shift the program back towards a championship-caliber level after a forgetful year.

There is some hope for the Wolverines' offense despite the 2024 season making things look bleak. Michigan recently landed a commitment from quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top player in the nation according to 247Sports Composite.

A new offensive coordinator plus the top prospect in the nation could be the perfect combination to transform the Wolverines' offense.
