Evan Engram Calls Out Azeez Al-Shaair for 'Dirty Hit' That Injured Trevor Lawrence

Andrew PetersDec 1, 2024

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram showed his displeasure for Azeez Al-Shaair's hit against quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the field by shoving the Houston Texans' linebacker after the play, and he called Al-Shaair out for the "dirty hit" following Sunday's matchup.

"It was a dirty hit," Engram said, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "Obviously those hits are always in question. Trevor was going down and I saw it out of my peripheral [vision]. I got a pretty clear view of it, and in that moment, just [reacted on] instincts. It just didn't feel like a clean hit, so just go stick up for my quarterback.

"I mean, I saw him sliding and then I saw the hit, and then just, honestly, it just took over. I just knew it was wrong. It was just a dirty play, and you stick up for your guys."

Late in the first half of Sunday's contest, Lawrence slid after a six-yard scramble but was still met with a violent hit in the head from Al-Shaair. The hit led to a scrum between the two teams, including a shove from Engram.

Al-Shaair was ejected for an illegal hit to the quarterback's head and neck area while Engram picked up a personal foul penalty. Lawrence was carted off the field and did not return due to the head injury. It was later revealed Lawrence suffered a concussion.

Earlier this season, Al-Shaair was fined $11,817 for punching Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson on the sideline. While it was a hefty price to pay, he didn't have to miss any games as a result of the scuffle. It's unclear whether he will receive a fine or suspension for his hit on Sunday.

Al-Shaair is the Texans' third-leading tackler this season with 63 along with two sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes defended. The sixth-year player had a career season in 2023, totaling 163 tackles and two sacks.

With Sunday's loss, the Jaguars dropped to 2-10 on the year and will now likely be without their starting quarterback for at least a week. They will have an AFC South matchup next week when they face the Tennessee Titans.
