A fight promptly broke out after the illegal hit and both Al-Shaair and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones were ejected.
Lawrence, meanwhile, was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a concussion. The quarterback provided an update after the game:
The consensus on social media was that Al-Shaair's hit was a dirty play, deserves a suspension alongside his ejection and that the Jacksonville players were justified in retaliating on behalf of their quarterback:
It is not the first altercation involving Al-Shaair this season.
During an October matchup against the Chicago Bears, the linebacker laid a big hit on Caleb Williams as the quarterback was heading out of bounds. Williams' teammates didn't take that lightly, swarming Al-Shaair, and in the proceeding scuffle the linebacker threw a punch at Chicago running back Roschon Johnson.
Officials missed the punch, so Al-Shaair avoided an ejection, but he was fined by the NFL for the incident.
Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters at the time that "we know from Azeez's perspective, we can't throw punches or anything like that," though he defended the hit in question as the physical brand of football he wants from the Texans, given that Williams was still inbounds.
Sunday's tackle was undoubtedly an illegal and dirty play, however, as Lawrence had clearly initiated a slide and Al-Shaair made contact with the quarterback's head. At the very least, Al-Shaair will be facing a much stiffer fine than he received earlier in the season.
Whether a suspension also follows remains to be seen.
It would be a big loss for Houston. When healthy this season, the 27-year-old has played well, coming into Sunday's game with 63 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles in nine contests.
Lawrence will be a much bigger loss for Jacksonville, however, if his concussion keeps him sidelined for multiple games. In the interim, Mac Jones will serve as the team's quarterback.
