Cowboys' Mike McCarthy Reacts to Jerry Jones' Comments About Possible New Contract

Doric SamNov 26, 2024

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy gave his thoughts about receiving a vote of confidence from team owner Jerry Jones this week.

McCarthy was asked about Jones saying during a radio appearance, "I don't think that's crazy at all" that he would receive a new contract to remain the team's head coach beyond the 2024 season.

"Why are you laughing?" McCarthy asked reporters (0:40 in video). "Crazy? I mean... I really haven't talked about it all year, so I'm definitely not going to start on a short week and an important division game. But I'm not going to throw away positive vibes either, so keep 'em coming. That's all good. But, yeah, that's not something I'm really focused on."

McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, and the Cowboys' 4-7 record has raised questions about his job security. Still, Jones said he hasn't ruled out the possibility of retaining him.

"That's not crazy. And listen, Mike McCarthy is one outstanding coach... this is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He's got great ideas," Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan's Shan & RJ. "So, bottom line is, in no place, in my body language or anything else, have you seen indications about what we're going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn't. We got a lot of football left... six football games, that's a lifetime."

Dallas ended a five-game losing streak with a 34-26 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday. While the team still has an uphill battle, a Thanksgiving Day matchup against the 2-9 New York Giants gives the Cowboys a good chance to start building some momentum for the home stretch of the season.

After facing the Giants, the Cowboys will go up against the Cincinnati Bengals (4-7) and Carolina Panthers (3-8). The next few weeks could go a long way toward determining McCarthy's future in Dallas.
