Report: Daniel Jones, Giants 'At Peace' with How Exit Was Handled amid Release

Adam WellsNov 23, 2024

Despite the surprise timing of his release, Daniel Jones and the New York Giants don't appear to have any animosity toward each other over how things played out.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, both Jones and the Giants are "at peace" with how the situation was handled.

Giants president John Mara announced on Friday that Jones had been granted his release following a meeting between the two sides.

The decision to part ways with Jones was seemingly made when head coach Brian Daboll announced on Monday that Tommy DeVito was going to start in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Drew Lock serving as the backup.

Even though it was expected that Jones would be released during the offseason, doing it now allows both sides to get a clean break at least two months ahead of time.

There was little doubt that the Giants were going to be looking for a new quarterback before the 2025 season. They have lost five straight games and currently own the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft, but they are just one loss behind the Jacksonville Jaguars for being tied with the worst record in the NFL.

Jones, who is expected to clear waivers to potentially sign with a new team as soon as Monday, will get an opportunity to catch on somewhere before the end of this season.

If things go well for Jones with a new coaching staff, it could lead to him securing a job as a backup in 2025. It would seem unlikely a team would guarantee him a starting job going into next season given how he has played since the start of the 2023 campaign.

The Giants gave Jones every opportunity to prove he could be their long-term option at quarterback. He has been with the organization for six years after being drafted No. 6 overall in 2019.

Jones had a very good season in 2022 in his first year with Daboll as head coach. He threw for 3,205 yards, ran for 708 yards and accounted for 22 touchdowns to help the Giants make the playoffs and upset the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.

That would end up being the high-water mark for Jones in a Giants uniform. He finished his tenure in New York with a 24-44-1 record in 69 games as a starter.
