Daniel Jones Rumors: Raiders 'Clearly a Fit' for QB After Release from Giants

Zach BacharNov 22, 2024

Daniel Jones is considered a "fit" for the Las Vegas Raiders following the quarterback's release from the New York Giants on Friday, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

"I love the contenders angle, but he could also have a chance to play right now," Fowler said during an appearance on SportsCenter. "So asking around, working the phones the last few hours, there's some fits out there he could fit into. Look at the Las Vegas Raiders, that's clearly a fit because they need help at that position and Frederick Walker, one of their quarterback coaches, did work exclusively with Daniel Jones as his quarterback coach at Duke where they had success, so they could bring it back there."

Jones was benched by New York on Monday before he requested to be cut in a meeting with Giants president John Mara.

Las Vegas' need for help under center was evident throughout the 2024 offseason, especially leading up to the draft. The Raiders held the No. 13 overall selection, but six quarterbacks were taken within the first 12 picks.

While the team's eventual selection of former Georgia tight end Brock Bowers has already paid dividends, the quarterback spot has still been an issue throughout Las Vegas' 2024 campaign.

Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell have earned the starting job at various points throughout the year and third-year passer Desmond Ridder has seen playing time when the other two signal-callers have been benched.

Minshew currently owns the top spot on the depth chart for the Raiders, but he has a record of just 2-6 in eight starts. He has also completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,783 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions.

The potential acquisition of Jones likely wouldn't turn around Las Vegas' season, but it could allow the team to get an extended look at the 27-year-old before he enters free agency.

Given the Raiders' overall record of 2-8, there's a strong chance they'll be picking higher in the 2025 draft compared to 2024. The Raiders could certainly target a rookie signal-caller, but Jones is a potential option if the team is eyeing a veteran that has some familiarity with the coaching staff.
