Before President Joe Biden leaves the White House when his term ends on Jan. 20, he hosted the 2023-24 NBA champion Boston Celtics at Washington D.C. on Thursday.
Biden, who is Irish Catholic, revealed during the ceremony that his Secret Service code name is Celtic (starts at :50 mark).

"For real. Because I'm Irish," the president said of his code name. "Everybody behind me is Irish in their heart. I feel a special pride in this trophy. From this old Irish Celtic, to all you Celtics, congratulations."
The history of U.S. presidents and their families having codenames dates back nearly 80 years. Names are typically chosen by the individual person related to some symbol of their personality or historical legacy.
Past examples of Presidential codenames include Renegade (Barack Obama), Trailblazer (George W. Bush) and Eagle (Bill Clinton).
Biden did make a joke about being able to relate to Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, who is one of the youngest coaches to win an NBA title, because the President was once one of the youngest senators in the United States when he took office in January 1973.
"Joe's the youngest head coach to win a title since the great Bill Russell," Biden said. "I told him I used to be the youngest and now I'm the oldest. I liked being the youngest better."
There might have been some conflicted emotions for Biden and the first family because they are well-known Philadelphia sports fans, but he was able to make it through the ceremony without letting any potential biases show.
The Celtics won their NBA-record 18th title last season by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals. Their 64 wins during the regular season were the fourth-most in franchise history.
