Lane Kiffin Says Moving to NFL from Ole Miss 'Wouldn't Make a Whole Lot of Sense'

Andrew PetersNov 21, 2024

Lane Kiffin has found success at the collegiate level with Ole Miss and would likely get interest from a number of NFL teams if he decided to make the jump to the professional level.

But the Rebels head coach has no interest in returning to the NFL. He explained on The Herd with Colin Cowherd why he likes coaching at the college level over the NFL.

"I really enjoy where we're at, I really enjoy it," he said (4:00 mark). "Also, when you win, the thing that I don't like about the NFL is when you win, you kind of get punished. You draft last. When you win more in college, you're able to get better players because now they see, 'Man, i can go there and win championships, I can go there and beat Georgia.' We've spent a lot of time to get it up to this place, that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to me."

Kiffin has had two stints in the NFL, serving as an assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000 and the head coach of the Raiders from 2007 to 2008. He returned to college football in 2009 when he became the head coach at Tennessee, and he has stayed in the college ranks ever since.

No where has Kiffin experienced the kind of success he's enjoying at Ole Miss. The Rebels are 8-2 on the year and are coming off an upset win over Georgia.

That win kept Ole Miss' College Football Playoff hopes alive, but the Rebels still have stains on their resume with losses to Kentucky and LSU. Ole Miss' will need to win its final two games against Florida and Mississippi State and from there, its CFP fate will be determined by the committee.

Playoff or not, it seems Kiffin won't be leaving Oxford for the NFL anytime soon.
