NBA Trade Rumors: Nets 'Expected to Be Open for Business,' Cam Thomas Available

Doric SamNov 19, 2024

Amid a rebuilding year, the Brooklyn Nets are reportedly open to dealing some players away, including their leading scorer.

The Athletic's Sam Amick reported on Tuesday that the Nets are "expected to be open for business," and rising star guard Cam Thomas "is widely considered to be available."

The Nets are off to a 5-9 start, which is reflective of first-year head coach Jordi Fernandez getting the most out of a roster that lacks significant star power. Still, Brooklyn made it clear that the 2024-25 season would be a rebuild when it sent star swingman Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks over the summer.

With Bridges gone, Thomas has stepped up as the Nets' No. 1 option and is posting career highs across the board with averages of 24.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from three-point range.

The 23-year-old is one of the most talented young players in the NBA and would garner significant interest in the trade market.

In addition to Thomas, Amick named veterans Dennis Schrรถder and Bojan Bogdanoviฤ‡ as potential candidates to be traded from Brooklyn this season.

While center Nic Claxton signed a four-year, $100 million contract extension last summer, Amick noted "the reality of the Nets' long-term plans means no one is likely off the table." Swingman Cam Johnson was also mentioned as an "intriguing" player for contending teams.

For now, Brooklyn will focus on trying to end its three-game losing streak when it hosts the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night. But it won't be a surprise if the Nets roster looks very different after the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 6.
