Thornton, a former second-round pick out of Baylor, appeared in six games for the Patriots this season, recording 47 yards on four receptions.
The speedy wide receiver failed to develop into the threat the Patriots had hoped for, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
The 24-year-old has totaled 385 yards since being drafted in 2022, along with two touchdowns and 18 first downs.
Thornton has not played since Week 8 against the New York Jets, where he logged 20 yards on two receptions.
Thornton faces stiff competition in Kansas City, vying for a spot alongside DeAndre Hopkins, Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
