Steelers vs. Broncos: 5 Biggest Storylines for Sunday's Wild Card Game

David LevinJun 7, 2018

While there may be more scoring in other games and records may shatter in terms of passing offense, the game between the Broncos and Steelers may be the most anticipated game of the weekend.

There are many questions with both of these teams that have not been answered, and while it would appear both teams are limping into the postseason, it should still make for an exciting matchup.

The quarterback play and the running attack for both teams will be scrutinized by the "experts." Can the defenses remain strong? Can Ben Roethlisberger lead his team back to the title game? And, of course, what about that guy named Tim Tebow? Will he be able to adjust under the pressure of the playoffs?

With these kinds of questions, it makes for a very entertaining Sunday afternoon.

And of course, there are these questions as well that have not been answered.

Is Ben Roethlisberger's Ankle Healed Enough to Lead the Team to Victory?

1 of 5

Big Ben said he suffered a setback this week while in practice, but that is not any reason to expect him to miss the playoff game against Denver.

Roethlisberger played in the season finale against Cleveland but did not look as sharp as he has been during the season. He suffered the ankle injury on Dec. 8 against the Browns.

Injuries like those could be something will have an effect on the passing game. The Steelers have had some great games this year from Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace. And when the team needs to move the chains, Roethlisberger can depend on Heath Miller and Hines Ward.

Will the Broncos Be Able to Run Against the Steelers Front Seven?

2 of 5

Willis McGahee proved there is still a lot left in his tank this year. The veteran runner amassed 1,199 yards for the Broncos. He did this while sharing the load with Tim Tebow and Lance Ball.

Can McGahee and the Broncos running attack break through the top-ranked defense in the NFL?

The Steelers only gave up 99.8 yards on the ground per contest, which was tops in the NFL.

If the Broncos cannot establish the running game, Tebow will be forced to pass, which could be a disaster if he is hurried out of the pocket.

Will the Steelers Look Ahead of This Game and Toward the Second Round

3 of 5

Could the Steelers be looking ahead to a matchup with New England or Baltimore?

You would think Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has taken the "one game at a time" approach.

While the Steelers are a wild-card team, they still won 12 games, which is no easy feat. They had an Achilles heel this season, that being the Baltimore Ravens.

While their playoff seeding states they missed out on the division title, they still could be the best team in the AFC.

Does a Playoff Loss Put John Fox's Job in Jeopardy?

4 of 5

It shouldn't. But at some point, should the Broncos lose, don't you think the question will be asked, "Why didn't you attempt to use Brady Quinn?"

Fox, John Elway and Tim Tebow, for that matter, have been linked or connected all season as this team has won and lost.

If the Broncos win, then it looks like David beat Goliath (especially if it is a fourth-quarter comeback). Should this team lose, then it becomes another offseason of questions about how the team will handle its quarterback situation in the draft and free agency, and whether or not Tebow is really ready to assume the starting role for the long haul.

If Tim Tebow Fails in Leading the Broncos to a Win, What Does His Future Hold?

5 of 5

I saved this one for last because it will become the biggest dinosaur in the Broncos locker room if Tebow has another bad game or this team loses its fourth straight game.

Tebow earned the confidence of team president John Elway earlier this season, and then lost the next two games. If he has a shaky performance, what happens going into the 2012 season?

Tebow is the enigma of the playoffs. All eyes are on him to see what he does.

While he was winning, everyone was talking about him and the rock star he had become. The past two weeks, that coverage has gotten less and less, but still he is a key component of the Broncos success, but also their failure as well.
