NFL Fans Troll Daniel Jones, Giants for Benching Rumors amid $160M Contract

As the New York Giants exit the bye week, the team has reportedly made a change at quarterback.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Giants benched Daniel Jones after losing eight of their first 10 games. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tommy DeVito will serve as the team's new starting quarterback over Drew Lock.

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension with New York in 2023. ESPN's Adam Schefter previously noted that the Giants could move on from him in the offseason, but he'd be owed $23 million fully guaranteed in 2025 if he were to get injured and couldn't pass a physical by March.

Fans criticized his tenure as New York's starting signal-caller following the move.

The Giants will now turn to Tommy DeVito under center, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

DeVito appeared in nine games during the 2023 season, which included six starts. He completed 64 percent of his throws for 1,101 yards and eight touchdowns compared to three interceptions.

As for Jones, his inconsistency was prevalent throughout the year and he hasn't been able to lead New York to wins. Dating back to 2023, he owns a record of 3-13 in his past 16 starts.

This season, Jones is averaging 207 yards per game through the air while amassing eight touchdown passes and getting picked off seven times. He also hasn't been as effective on the ground compared to past years, as his average of 26.5 rushing yards per game is his lowest mark since his rookie season in 2019.

The Giants entered their bye on a five-game losing streak. Over that span, Jones recorded four total touchdowns while turning the ball over six times.

The former Duke standout was selected by New York with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. In six seasons with the organization, he's made the playoffs once and has a 24-44-1 overall record.

As the Giants attempt to put an end to their losing streak against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Jones will be watching from the sidelines.
