NFL Insider: Giants Will 'Cut' Daniel Jones in 2025 After Benching 'Him Soon'

Jack MurrayNov 15, 2024

Daniel Jones' time as the New York Giants starting quarterback appears to be coming to an end very soon.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported that the franchise "will bench him soon" and that he will likely be cut following the end of the 2024 season:

"It's over for Jones in New York. The Giants will bench him soon and then cut ties with him at the end of the season. The Giants tried to draft his replacement this past offseason but couldn't move up and decided against selecting the likes of Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix, all of whom were still on the board when New York picked wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6. Right or wrong, the Giants now have no choice but to draft a quarterback, and at the moment, they are in prime position to do it. At 2-8, New York has a great chance of landing a top-three pick in the 2025 draft."

Jones has thrown for 2,078 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while also adding 265 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He has led the Giants to a 2-8 start to the season.

He is in the second season of his four-year, $160 million contract but the team does have an out following the 2024 season. This would allow the Giants to take on a dead cap hit of just $22.2 million, per Spotrac, and move forward with a new quarterback under center.

He does have an injury clause in his contract that would force New York to pay him $23 million for the 2025 season, so electing to bench him could be a strong option for a Giants team far away from playoff contention.

New York is currently in line to get an early pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and quarterbacks like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders could be intriguing replacement options for Jones.
