Chiefs' Justin Reid Reacts to Calls for Him to Kick FGs After Harrison Butker Injury

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid told fans he will not be taking over for injured kicker Harrison Butker despite his previous success as an emergency preseason kicker.

He thanked fans for "the vote of confidence."

In 2022, Reid was called up to kick an extra point when Butker was injured during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

After reports came out on Thursday that Butker was headed to the injured reserve with a knee injury, fans quickly remembered Reid's history as a kicker.

Reid reportedly was designated to serve as an emergency kicker while playing at Stanford, and Chiefs assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub said in May that Kansas City had considered using Reid on some kicks this season in order to protect Butker from tackles.

ESPN's Adam Schefter (h/t Adam Teicher) reported on Thursday that the Chiefs signed kicker Spencer Shrader from New York Jets practice squad. It sounds like it will be Shrader, and not Reid, being called up for extra point attempts when the Chiefs return to action with a Sunday road game against the Buffalo Bills.

Butker is meanwhile expected to return in time for "the home stretch and the playoffs" after undergoing surgery on his left knee, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
