Jon Jones: 'I'll Just Move on With My Life' if UFC Doesn't Want Alex Pereira Fight

Doric SamNov 13, 2024

Ahead of his scheduled title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has doubled down on his desire to face light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira in a super fight.

"If the bosses don't want the Alex Pereira fight to happen, then I'll just move on with my life," Jones told reporters at Wednesday's media day event. "You can either lose me, or get one more super fight ... and that's with Alex Pereira."

Jones floated the idea of facing Pereira for the UFC "BMF" title earlier this week, even going as far as saying he'd relinquish the heavyweight title to make the fight happen.

"It'd be cool to fight over the heavyweight championship but I would also willingly give up the heavyweight championship," Jones told Sportsnet on Monday. "I walked away from the light heavyweight championship. I'd love to walk away from this one as well on top, on [my] own terms, good head on your shoulders, making lots of money. I love the position that I'm in right now. Fighting Pereira for the 'BMF' belt, that would be cool. We both have two belts in two weight classes and the night we fought we'd both be fighting for our third belt, which would be the 'BMF.' How cool would that be?"

However, a matchup between Jones and Pereira would leave interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall twisting in the wind. Jones has long maintained his refusal to face Aspinall in a title unification fight, and he went even further on Wednesday by saying he has no intentions of doing business with him in the future because "he just played his cards wrong with me, personally."

Pereira is the biggest star in the UFC today and Jones is one of the greatest fighters in the history of MMA, so a fight between them would undoubtedly excite a lot of fans. However, it's not yet clear if the UFC would be willing to put together a matchup between them if Jones successfully defends his title against Miocic on Saturday.
