Jets' Aaron Rodgers Defends Mike McCarthy, Says Cowboys HC Is 'Built for Adversity'

Paul KasabianNov 12, 2024

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers defended embattled Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, saying that his former Green Bay Packers head coach is "built for adversity."

Rodgers made his remarks during his weekly Pat McAfee Show appearance (2:25 mark).

"What I know about Mike is, if anybody can handle that, down there, it's big Mike," Rodgers said. "Big Mike is built for, he's built for adversity."

McCarthy is in the final season of a five-year deal. The 3-6 Cowboys, losers of four straight, rank 23rd in points per game and 31st in points allowed per game. Quarterback Dak Prescott is out for the year with a hamstring injury. There seems to be never-ending drama in Dallas, with the AT&T Stadium sun glare and speculation about McCarthy's job taking centerstage of late.

Regarding the latter, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the team's 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday that he won't be making a midseason coaching change.

It's ultimately not looking good for McCarthy's long-term future in Dallas with the way this season is going. He did enjoy three great regular seasons from 2021-2023, with the team going 12-5 each time and winning the NFC East in 2021 and 2023.

However, Dallas has only won one playoff game under McCarthy, and this year will almost certainly end with the Cowboys going home early.

McCarthy, alongside Rodgers, enjoyed more success in Green Bay. The two were together for 13 years, winning Super Bowl XLV in February 2011. With Rodgers as the starter under McCarthy (2008-2018), the Packers made the playoffs eight straight times and won the NFC North on five occasions.

McCarthy's final year (2018) didn't go well, as he was fired after a 4-9-1 start. He's ultimately dealt with much adversity before, so McCarthy isn't a stranger to a season like this. However, it looks like he'll have to weather a big storm with Dallas reeling right now.

McCarthy and the Cowboys will look to stop the skid Monday when they host the Houston Texans.
