Floyd Mayweather: Boxing Officials Should Only Issue License for Pacquiao Fight

Donald WoodJan 7, 2012

While undefeated boxing sensation Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. has been granted unwarranted exemption in his court case to delay an inevitable prison stay, it may be for good reason.

Mayweather was convicted of domestic violence and sentenced to 90 days in jail, a term that was later moved back until June 1. That would give Money and his people plenty of time to set up a May 5 super fight between him and Manny Pacquiao.

That is if they will issue Mayweather a license to fight. Before the Pac-Man vs. Money fight can ever go down, Mayweather has to appear in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission and prove that he deserves the privilege despite his actions outside the ring.

Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Keith Kizer told TMZ.com:

"

The commission looks at experience, integrity, character and skill to determine whether or not it's appropriate to issue a license.

"

While it seems like an easy decision, this is the same commission that rejected Mike Tyson’s bid in 2002 for a license after one of the many pre-fight brawls Tyson took part in.

For a judge to be swayed to move a jail sentence, she had to have been convinced that it was of great importance. The only thing that could be that important would be the fight of the century.

"

I've been told May 5 is open. Losing is in Pacquiao's mind, because he lost just last week. He lost to Marquez three times. May 5 is the date. Sign the contract. I'm waiting.

"

It’s always hard to tell who is lying in these situations and which team is really dragging their feet behind the scenes, but this reprieve from the courts could be enough to get the ball rolling toward the epic battle with Pacquiao that every boxing fan in the world wants to see.

With the Athletic Commission looking into the character of a person before issuing a license, they should know that Mayweather may renege on his end of the deal and fight some scrub for a major payday.

Before Money is issued a license to fight, the board should require that a contract is signed by both Mayweather and Pacquiao before they will allow it to happen.

Force Mayweather’s hand so he can’t squirm out of this brawl.
