Commanders' Johnny Newton: Teammates Supportive After Offsides Penalty vs. Steelers

Doric SamNov 10, 2024

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Johnny Newton committed a crucial penalty when he was drawn offsides late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After the game, Newton told reporters that the support from his teammates and coaches helped him get over his mistake, telling him, "Don't let that play get to me, just put it behind me."

The Steelers were facing a fourth-and-1 with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter when quarterback Russell Wilson used his cadence to make Newton jump early. The penalty gave Pittsburgh a first down and allowed the team to run out the clock to secure a 28-27 win.

The Commanders had taken a 24-14 lead early in the second half and appeared to be in control. Running backs Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols combined for three rushing touchdowns as rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels had a relatively quiet game with 202 yards on 17-of-34 passing with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Wilson was able to put the Steelers in front with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass to veteran receiver Mike Williams, who was acquired at last week's trade deadline from the New York Jets.

The loss dropped Washington's record to 7-3, causing the team to fall out of first place in the NFC East.

However, the Commanders will have to regroup quickly, as they will be facing the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) on Thursday Night Football this week with first place on the line. Newton will certainly be motivated to bounce back in a big way after costing his team in Sunday's loss.
