Cam Ward's Heisman Campaign Takes Hit Among CFB Fans as No. 4 Miami Gets Upset By GT

Andrew PetersNov 9, 2024

Miami is undefeated no more.

Georgia Tech handed the No. 4 Hurricanes their first loss of the season on Saturday, holding off a late push to beat Miami 28-23.

The Canes have narrowly avoided upsets against Virginia Tech, Cal and Louisville so far this year, but didn't have enough to keep their hopes of a perfect season alive on Saturday.

Miami trailed 28-16 heading into the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter, but Cam Ward led the Hurricanes down the field to make it 28-23. Miami's defense put the ball back in Ward's hands to try to take the lead with less than two minutes to play, but a strip-sack from the Yellow Jackets sealed the win.

Ward was arguably the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy coming into the game, but fans on social media declared that his chances took a hit with the upset.

Despite the loss, it was still an outstanding day for Ward, who finished with 348 passing yards and three touchdowns. He's now up to 3,494 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions on the year.

His Heisman hopes aren't completely shot with the loss, but it will be hard to make a case against top players like Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.

Miami still has the chance to both win the ACC and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Hurricanes have a relatively easy path moving forward as they'll face Wake Forest and Syracuse to close out the year and would likely secure their CFP fate by winning out thanks to a more forgiving 12-team format.
