NFL Rumors: Chiefs OC Matt Nagy 'Should Be in the Mix' for HC Job in Offseason

Adam WellsNov 8, 2024

Despite flaming out in his first stint as an NFL head coach, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is receiving endorsements from people within the league to get a second chance.

Per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, coaching agents and executives around the NFL feel that Nagy "should be" in the mix for head coaching jobs that come open after this season.

Nagy is in his second stint with the Chiefs. He returned to Andy Reid's staff in February 2022 as quarterbacks coach and a senior assistant before being promoted to offensive coordinator last season after Eric Bieniemy left to join the Washington Commanders.

The Bears lost 16-15 to the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round when Cody Parkey's go-ahead field-goal attempt with 10 seconds to play hit the left upright and crossbar in what became known as the "double doink" kick.

That was the only time Nagy finished with a winning record in four seasons with the Bears. He did lead them to another playoff appearance in 2020 with an 8-8 record, but they again lost in the wild card round, 21-9, to the New Orleans Saints.

After going 6-11 in 2021, the Bears fired Nagy. Jones noted that time has "helped" make Nagy's 34-31 record in Chicago look even better and Reid is prepared to vouch for him as a head coach after this season.

There aren't a lot of obvious standout coaching candidates to watch right now. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the clear No. 1, but he's been very particular about leaving the team and plans to be once again this offseason.

Some of the candidates from last offseason who didn't get hired don't look as strong anymore, most notably Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

The list of potential candidates beyond Nagy who could be considered by teams this offseason include Johnson, Bill Belichick, Aaron Glenn and Mike Vrabel.
