Cowboys Rumors: Jonathan Mingo Acquired from Panthers at 2024 NFL Trade Deadline

Joseph ZuckerNov 5, 2024

The Dallas Cowboys are acquiring wide receiver Jonathan Mingo along with a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Carolina Panthers for a 2025 fourth-rounder, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

During his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan (via The Athletic's Jon Machota), team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys would be buyers prior to the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline and singled out the receiver position:

A number of prominent wideouts have changed teams ahead of the deadline, so seeing Mingo be the ultimate choice for Dallas is likely to be a little deflating for the fanbase.

The 25-year-old, a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, has caught 55 passes for 539 yards through 24 games in his career. He's averaging just 13.4 yards per game in 2024, with a pair of rookies (Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker) overtaking him in Carolina's offensive hierarchy.

Compounding matters, the Cowboys seemingly didn't even good value in the swap and instead paid a premium with the deadline just hours away.

Mingo is also a somewhat puzzling target as a midseason addition in light of recent events.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is reportedly expected to miss multiple weeks due to a hamstring injury, and Jones said Tuesday a stint on injured reserve might be forthcoming. If that's the case, then the Cowboys are looking at a minimum of four games with Cooper Rush or Trey Lance as the starting quarterback.

Dallas could be without Prescott indefinitely and Jones just acquired a wideout who's still pretty raw and more of a developmental prospect. It's hard to see how much Mingo will be able to alter the trajectory of the team's season.

More than anything, the trade is bound to serve as a microcosm for larger issues within the Cowboys organization.
