NFL Exec Predicts Anthony Richardson Likely Traded in 2025 If Colts QB Isn't QB1

Doric SamNov 4, 2024

The future of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is uncertain after his benching last week, and some around the NFL are wondering if he could be on the move by next year.

An NFL executive told ESPN's Stephen Holder that the Colts could choose to trade Richardson if he's unable to solidify himself as the starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

"I think [Richardson] will be there next year, and they'll try to start him but have a backup or bridge [QB] they believe can take over if it doesn't work," the executive said before adding that if Richardson fails at that point, he would likely be traded.

The Colts drafted Richardson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. He had started only 13 games during his college career at Florida, tying Mitch Trubisky for the fewest collegiate starts by a quarterback selected in the first round. At 22 years old, he was the youngest starting signal-caller in the NFL entering the 2024 campaign.

Unfortunately, Richardson's inexperience was constantly on display. In six starts this season, he completed 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. While he's known for his dual-threat skills, he produced just 242 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took over as the starter but struggled in Sunday night's 21-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, so perhaps Richardson will get another chance to prove himself later this season.

For now, he will continue watching from the bench as the Colts prepare to face the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
