Drake Maye Out for Patriots vs. Jets with Concussion; Jacoby Brissett Replaces at QB

Timothy RappOct 27, 2024

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was officially ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's matchup against the New York Jets after suffering a concussion, head coach Jerod Mayo said on the CBS broadcast at halftime.

Maye suffered the injury during the second quarter, as he was struck in the head by an opposing team's helmet as he went down for a slide.

He was replaced by Jacoby Brissett.

At the time of the injury, Maye was 3-for-6 through the air for 23 yards, adding three rushes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Maye, 22, has inserted a touch of life into New England's offense since being named the starter, throwing for 519 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions in his first two starts heading into Sunday while adding 56 rushing yards.

The Patriots still lost both of those games, moving them to 1-6 on the season. But it was hard to pin that on Maye, with a leaky defense and a lack of dynamic playmakers still plaguing the Patriots. After last week's loss, Mayo called the Pats a "soft football team across the board."

"I felt like we just went out there and played soft. We're playing soft at the moment," he later told reporters following a 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. "Now in saying that, do I think we have the guys in there that can turn this ship around? One hundred percent. But that comes through hard work and getting better each and every day."

Maye, the team's No. 3 overall pick during April's NFL draft, has looked like one of the players who will help right the ship over the long term. For at least the remainder of the matchup against the Jets, however, Brissett—who threw for 696 yards, two touchdowns and an interception coming into Sunday's play, completing just 58.5 percent of his passes—will be called upon once again.
