Cowboys Rumors: Dalvin Cook to Make 2024 NFL Season Debut vs. 49ers

Adam WellsOct 26, 2024

Looking for a spark to ignite their season, the Dallas Cowboys will Dalvin Cook available for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Cook will play Sunday night, after ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the four-time Pro Bowl running back was "getting closer" to making his season debut this week.

The Cowboys signed Cook to their practice squad on Aug. 28. He joined a running back group that included Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn.

While the Cowboys don't have any injury issues at running back right now, their production from that spot has been abysmal through the first six games.

Dowdle is the team's leading rusher with 246 yards on 59 attempts, but he has yet to find the end zone as a runner. He does have two receiving touchdowns. Elliott is averaging a career-low 3.0 yards per attempt on 38 carries.

Dallas' 77.2 rushing yards per game and 3.5 yards per attempt ranks last in the NFL. No other team is averaging fewer than 80 yards per game on the ground.

It's unclear how much of a difference Cook will make at this stage of his career, but he at least gives head coach Mike McCarthy another option.

Cook spent most of the 2023 season with the New York Jets after being released by the Minnesota Vikings. He had 292 yards from scrimmage and no touchdowns on 82 touches in 15 games as Breece Hall's backup.

The Jets released Cook prior to their final game of the season. He joined the Baltimore Ravens on their practice squad on Jan. 4 after Keaton Mitchell suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cook's only appearance for the Ravens was in their 34-10 win over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round. He ran for 23 yards on eight carries.

The Cowboys (3-3) are looking to get back on track coming out of the bye in Week 7. Their last game was a 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions on Oct. 13.
