NBA Announces Scoring Error in Warriors' Win vs. Blazers, Adjusts Score 1 Day Later

Adam WellsOct 25, 2024

A scoring error that occurred in the Golden State Warriors' season-opening win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday has been corrected one day after the game was played.

The NBA announced on Thursday that De'Anthony Melton has been credited with an extra point and the final score of the game has been changed to a 140-104 win for the Warriors due to an incorrect missed free throw assessed late in the third quarter.

Yahoo Sports' Jack Baer noted it's "uncommon" for the NBA to announce a mistake and change the final score in part because it could fall under the misapplication of the official playing rules.

If this game had been close and the Warriors had lost, they could have filed a protest that would have allowed part of the game to be replayed.

Fortunately, the Warriors had no trouble taking care of business against the Blazers. They outscored Portland 79-51 between the second and third quarters to break the game wide open.

The score was 91-67 when Melton went to the charity stripe with 2:00 remaining in the third quarter.

Melton finished 11 points in 19 minutes after the scoring revision. This marked the fourth time in Warriors franchise history they have scored at least 140 points in a season opener. It most recently happened at the start of the 1990-91 season when beat the Denver Nuggets 162-158.

The 36-point margin of defeat marks the largest season-opening loss in Blazers history.
