Vince Young Named to 2024 SEC Legends Class; Former Texas Star Played in Big 12

Julia StumbaughOct 22, 2024

Former Texas quarterback Vince Young may have spent his three college seasons in the Big 12, but that hasn't stopped the SEC from honoring his Longhorns career.

Young was among the 16 former players named to the 2024 SEC Legends Class on Tuesday.

Texas's tenure in the Big 12 spanned from 1996 to 2023 and included Young's run to the 2005 national championship. The Longhorns joined the SEC ahead of the 2024 season.

The SEC honor comes after Young was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame five years ago in recognition of his historic 2005 campaign, during which he became the first quarterback in FBS history to amass more than 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.

The former Texas quarterback isn't the only member of the 2024 class who is being honored for his work in the Big 12.

Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer was also named to the class. Switzer coached the Sooners through 16 seasons in the Big 12 between 173 and 1988. Like Texas, Oklahoma joined the SEC ahead of the 2024 season.

The 2024 class also featured Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, who represented the Tigers between 2005 and 2008, and Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, who played for the Aggies in 2011.

Honoring players who starred for their program while playing in a different conference is nothing new for the SEC Football Legends award program, which has been conducted since 1994.

The 2024 class will be honored during a Dec. 6 ceremony at Atlanta's College Football Hall of Fame, and on Dec. 7 during the SEC Football Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Young, Switzer, Daniel and Joeckel are set to be honored alongside Alabama's Barrett Jones, Arkansas' Ken Hamlin, Auburn's Marcus McNeill, Florida's Rex Grossman, Georgia's Terrence Edwards, Kentucky's Dicky Lyons St., LSU's Andrew Whitworth, Ole Miss' Dexter McCluster, Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox, South Carolina's Corey Miller, Tennessee's Eric Berry and Vanderbilt's Ricky Anderson.
