Garrett Wilson Says 'I'm Playing Like S--t'; Rodgers Defends WR amid NFL Trade Rumors

Zach BacharOct 21, 2024

Garrett Wilson was hard on himself after his dropped pass led to an interception during the New York Jets' 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.

"I got to catch the damn ball," Wilson said after the game, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. "I'm playing like s--t right now. Got to fix it. I don't take that lightly. That was the reason we lost the game at the end of the day. [That] s--t can't happen. Can't happen. It's a terrible play."

With the Jets trailing by one point in the third quarter, Aaron Rodgers threw a pass to an open Wilson. The ball bounced off the receiver's chest and was intercepted by Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr., who returned it to New York's one-yard line and set up a touchdown for Pittsburgh.

Rodgers told Wilson that he would continue to target him moving forward while taking accountability for his own struggles, as he was picked off twice in the game.

"I said I'm going to come back to you," Rodgers explained to reporters. "He's a dynamic player. We need to target him. Obviously, nobody feels sicker than him about that play, but he's a dynamic player."

"I have to play better," said Rodgers, per Cimini. "That's the key, I have to play better."

Wilson's name has surfaced in trade rumors, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that multiple teams have looked into a deal involving him. The Jets "are not planning" to move the former Offensive Rookie of the Year, though.

The 24-year-old caught five of his nine targets for 61 yards against Pittsburgh. Wilson has recorded 46 receptions for 460 yards and three touchdowns in seven appearances this season.

His role in the offense may be altered by New York's recent trade for Davante Adams, although Rodgers confirmed that he'll still target Wilson.

The Jets lost their fourth straight game on Sunday, falling to 2-5 on the season as a whole.
