Video: Patrick Beverley Says He Had to Take 11 Drug Tests amid 4-Game Winning Streak
Patrick Beverley's first season with Hapoel Tel Aviv is going well, save for a recent drug testing issue during the team's four-game winning streak.
On the latest episode of The Pat Bev Pod, Beverley explained he had to take 11 drug tests in part because there was "too much water" in his system from the first 10 after he took part in fasting for Yom Kippur.
Beverley announced in July that he was signing with the Israeli Premier League club after playing 12 seasons in the NBA.
Hapoel Tel Aviv started the season with back-to-back losses before starting its current four-game winning streak on Oct. 1. The streak coincided with Yom Kippur—the holiest day of the year in Judaism, centered on atonement and repentance—from sundown on Oct. 11 to nightfall on Oct. 12.
Traditional Yom Kippur observances include a fast in which a person abstains from all food and drink, including water. Beverley announced on Oct. 11 that he was going to attempt the fast and provided a countdown, including what he was going to eat, as soon as it ended.
Hapoel Tel Aviv had three days off from Oct. 10-12 for the holiday. The team returned to action on Oct. 13, earning an 85-72 road win over Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem.
Beverley explained he was drug tested after the game until 4 a.m., got home just over an hour later and caught a flight with the team for their game on Wednesday.
The chaotic process didn't seem to bother Beverley much on the court in Hapoel Tel Aviv's 79-66 victory against Dreamland Gran Canaria in a EuroCup game on Wednesday. He was terrific with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals in 27 minutes.
In four EuroCup games, Beverley leads Tel Aviv in scoring average (14.8 points), rebounds (6.3), assists (5.0) and steals (2.5).
Hapoel Tel Aviv is currently in second place in the EuroCup standings with a 3-1 record and plus-29 point differential. The club's next game will be back in the Israeli Basketball Premier League against Bnei Herzliya on Saturday.
