5-Star SG Braylon Mullins Commits to UConn Over UNC, Indiana

Scott PolacekOct 23, 2024

The UConn Huskies added a game-changer to their future roster Wednesday.

That is because Braylon Mullins committed to their men's basketball program and chose them over the Indiana Hoosiers and North Carolina Tar Heels.

The 6'5" playmaker is a 5-star prospect and the No. 23 overall player, No. 5 shooting guard and No. 3 player from the state of Indiana in the 2025 class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

He narrowed his decision down to Indiana, UConn and North Carolina ahead of this choice, and the Huskies won a tightly contested recruiting battle for someone who can help transform their offense when he arrives on campus.

"[He's a] pure scorer at every level," Greenfield-Central coach Luke Meredith told insider Adam Zagoria. "Best shooter in the country, in my opinion. High basketball IQ and an elite passer with both hands."

That shooting is what immediately jumps out about Mullins' game.

Adam Finkelstein of 247Sports said his range extends "well beyond the college arc at this point," which plays well with his ability to also make plays in transition, attack the basket as a cutter or dribbler, and facilitate when defenses collapse on him.

He isn't just a shooter, though, as his defense and lateral quickness stand out for someone who can guard multiple positions given his overall size.

"The bottom line is that when you have an elite shooter, capable of getting hot at any point, who is also a standout defender, with positional size, solid athleticism, and a competitive mentality ... you have an elite national prospect," Finkelstein wrote.

UConn landing an elite prospect like Mullins is a case of the rich getting richer, as head coach Dan Hurley has established his program as the gold standard of the sport.

The Huskies are coming off back-to-back national championships and enter the 2024-25 campaign on the short list of realistic teams that could cut down the nets again come April. They have proven they can maximize the talent of players across different positions, and the future will remain bright as long as Hurley is recruiting at a top level.

Mullins is a top-level recruit, and he will look to keep that championship tradition alive when he arrives.
