Devin White Released by Eagles; Didn't Play in Any Games After $4M Contract

Andrew PetersOct 8, 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles released linebacker Devin White, the team announced on Tuesday.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles explored trading White in the preseason but never found a deal for him. ESPN's Tim McManus reported that White and Philadelphia agreed to a deal to release him now rather than at the trade deadline when he'd be subjected to waivers.

The 2021 Pro Bowler signed with the Eagles on a one-year, $4 million deal in March, but he never recorded a snap for them before his release.

White spent the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he opted to sign with the Eagles this offseason in hopes of getting a fresh start after struggling in 2023.

"I took less, because I felt it was a better situation," White said on the Pivot podcast in August (h/t Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith). "That lets you know it ain't about the money. It ain't ever been about the money. It's about being in the right situation, the right environment. and being able to have fun."

In his Pro Bowl season in 2021, White had 128 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He posted similar numbers in 2022 before dropping off in 2023 and recording 83 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 14 games.

The 26-year-old also said during the podcast appearance in August that he felt pressured to play while injured during his last season in Tampa Bay.

Now released from the Eagles, he will look to find a place within another team's defense. While he never found his way to Philadelphia's rotation, several teams could benefit from a proven player like White, and he'll hope to land on one of those rosters.
