Jets Fans Eye Bill Belichick as Dream HC Target After Robert Saleh's Firing
The New York Jets made a surprising move to fire head coach Robert Saleh five games into the 2024 season with a 2-3 record, and fans are hoping the team turns to a former longtime rival as his replacement.
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who is spending the 2024 season working as a broadcaster and analyst, has been pegged as a dream hire for Jets fans who have been starving for the franchise to achieve success.
The Jets named defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as their interim head coach, but an experienced leader like Belichick would be a game-changer for a team that has missed the playoffs in 13 straight years, the longest active streak in North American sports.
Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles and won two more during his time as an assistant with the New York Giants. He mutually parted ways with New England after a 4-13 finish to the 2023 season and surprisingly went unhired this past offseason.
It should be noted that Belichick spent one day as Jets head coach in 2000 before bolting to take the Patriots job. His longstanding animosity toward the New York franchise has been well-documented, so it would be somewhat surprising if he fulfills Jets fans' wishes and becomes the team's next head coach.
Still, the prospect of a partnership between Belichick and veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers sounds like a winning formula, so Jets fans won't stop dreaming about the possibility of the 72-year-old taking the helm and leading the team back to prominence.
